Parent’s Role in Facilitating Literacy

Did you know that 90% of your child’s brain is formed from birth to age 5?!  And over 700 neural connections are formed every second during that same time period?!

As a parent, you will no doubt want to take full advantage of that incredible “window of opportunity” for your child’s most optimal benefit.

Did you also know that, as a parent, YOU play the most critical role in facilitating a solid literacy foundation for your child.

Don’t be alarmed!

Contrary to what one might think, helping your child build a rich literacy foundation does not require formal training or special skills, but merely a conscious and consistent effort to playfully and meaningfully interact with your child in day-to-day routine activities such as eating, dressing, bathing, shopping, driving, etc.

That’s right!  Just maintaining a conscious and consistent effort to engage your child in meaningful conversation and activities each day will serve to build and enrich his/her literacy foundation.

Positively impact your child’s future by staying mindful that talking, singing, reading, and playing all stimulate brain development.

Talk, sing, and read habitually with your child!

Stay cognizant of the abundant opportunities to ask your child questions and engage in daily conversation and interaction.

Commit to reading aloud to your child for a minimum of 15 minutes each day.

Remember, the moments truly are fleeting.  Make the very most of them!
