A Mighty Mission from “First Book” – End Illiteracy!

Since my last post about so many children not even having access to books in order to acquire vital foundational literacy skills, I’ve discovered some wonderful organizations out there that are stepping up and making a difference to empower these children for success.

One of these organizations is “First Book” and it provides new, high-quality books and educational resources (for free and at low cost) to schools and programs that serve children from low-income families (from birth to age 18).  Their mission: to end illiteracy!

To date, First Book has distributed over one million books and educational resources throughout the United States and Canada and will be providing digital resources as well.  First Book says they have a lot more work to do.  Even though that number is impressive, they’ve reached only a small fraction of the population.  First Book reports that 42% of children in the United States (equating to more than 30 million) live in low-income households.  Wow!  I had no idea that number was so high….

First Book is changing the lives of many, many children by improving interest in reading, increasing their desire to learn, and increasing reading in the their homes.  First Book is growing rapidly and has been highlighted as one of the most innovative organizations of its kinds.
