Helping Parents Promote Literacy

We’re excited to introduce our Parent Guide to be used with our first book, Meet the Capital Letters, to help parents discover fun and easy ways that encourage early literacy.  You’ll also find practical ways to help your child master the alphabet letters and engage in meaningful activities that enhance learning.

In addition, for each alphabet letter, the Parent Guide presents:

  • A thought-provoking question about the letter’s life and character to help develop critical thinking skills.
  • An activity or discussion topic relating to the letter.
  • A craft activity to support letter recognition.
  • Additional learning concepts to explore such as numbers, colors, and shapes.
  • A fun kinesthetic movement to reinforce letter shape.

Here’s a look at letter K.

  • Letter K is very kind in addition to her love for kites.  Talk about ways to show kindness to others.
  • Do one random act of kindness.  Plan to do one each week.
  • Make a kite for letter K, decorate it, and use yarn or ribbon for the tail.
  • Name the colors in the rainbow.  Which color matches the kite?
  • Stick your right foot out and stretch your right arm up as high as you can like you’re flying a kite.

Let’s see what letter V is up to.

  • Letter V appreciates the vivid beauty of the valley.  Talk about the beauty of nature and how amazing it is.
  • Go on a nature walk and observe the breathtaking views all around.
  • Draw letter V and glue on leaves, flowers, and other things you found on your walk.
  • How many pointy trees and how many round trees are there?
  • Put your arms together at the elbows to form letter V.

Remember to help your child recite the rhyming verse for each letter as you do the letter crafts and activities in order to facilitate mastery of the letter components.  Once each verse is memorized, your child will be equipped with visual and auditory recall of the letter shape, sound, and how to write the letter.

Parents play a vital role in helping to establish a solid literacy foundation.  It’s important to remain aware of these everyday opportunities.  TALK, SING, READ, PLAY.  Make the most of these precious early years with your child.  They will be gone way too soon.

We hope you enjoy the Parent Guide and getting to know more about the letters and their lives in Alphabet Anatomy.
